Technology, it's smart but does it keep you smart?
Hello, Weevils. It's Beano150 here. Let's get right into the post!
Technology, for most of us, follows us everywhere. Don't believe me? If it wasn't for technology you wouldn't be reading this blog post, or even on this website!
In most schools, you are forced to rely on journals and textbooks. Why? In the classroom, students could simply mess about by texting or browsing the internet instead of using the given websites to learn.
You may think schools could block websites on your phone such as Twitter and Facebook etc, so you don't use them. One problem... they aren't allowed to do this (legally!). Schools are not responsible for whichever websites you browse on your personal devices such as phones and tablets.
One thing they can do however, is block such websites on their WiFi. No problem? Think again! Students could easily disconnect from the school WiFi network and use their own data to use the restricted websites, or the school might not even have a free WiFi connection for students to use themselves. It is a learning environment after all.
From my experience, as phones are actually allowed where I learn (not during lessons), I don't think phones and other technology should be allowed. In my classes, almost everyone sneakily turns their phone on and browses the internet or sends text messages underneath the table.
Students for some reason have to use their phones during classes for entertainment purposes, when they signed up for the course in the first place and have technically requested to be given education. Well, for those who are 18+ anyway, since you legally have to be in education until 18 years of age.
I've experienced it, in my classes, people use their phones for their own advantage. Sure, allow the devices during breaks, dinner and other free time but not during class. Maybe if schools could have their own tablets and laptops, then block restricted websites and allow students to use them it could work. I'd say yes to that but no to personal devices. One small problem though... laptops and tablets are not cheap so it might be a problem for a school to do this.
One more time, my conclusion is I do not think schools should allow your own personal phones and other technology during lessons because of the reasons above.
What do you think? Feel free to comment below with your opinion!
